What is a Wake Bait? How do you fish a wake bait?
A Wake bait is a top water bait that swims slightly submerged that causes a characteristic wake in its path. Wake baits come in a solid body or a jointed body that moves through the water more like a swimbait.
The wake bait lure has become one of the most highly sought crank bait variation lures to fish over submerged grass and submerged timber. Wake baits hit the scene in the 90’s but did not really catch on till recently their effectiveness with a larger bandwidth of fisherman.
The wake bait is fished as a top water bait when retrieved in should be just submerged with a characteristic side to side wobble action which causes a v type wake. Hold the rod tip up in the 10 to 11 o’clock position when reeling it in. Still water or water with a light surface disturbance so that the wake is visible are ideal conditions. Fish will come up from depths to hit this bass bait!
