Blade baits are the best lures for bass when the water gets cold prior to the freeze! Learn here how we fish them!
A good question, and depending whom you ask, you will likely get a different answer. Our definition is that a blade bait is a tight wobble vibrating metal lipless crankbait. Some are equipped with rattles others are silent running. What they all have in common is they are a sinking bait and are deadly effective for jigging, retrieving, and trolling. Our favorite presentation is bottom hopping when the weather turns cold.
Blade baits are a go to bait when the water temp starts to sharply drop into the 50’s right up to the freeze. Many bait fish will die off with the temperature change and a blade bait for bass fishing is wicked deadly in its ability to match the circumstance.
When the temp drops, bass and predators slow down. They begin to orient up and down vs. horizontal. Look for 45 degree related banks that drop into a channel. Bass will orient to structure in deeper water and migrate shallower to follow bait fish. Bait fish will tend to hold and orient near large rocks, pilings, underwater wood or trees in that the water will be warmer.
Bass will glide deep to shallow and back again in that it requires less energy expenditure and they can expend less energy to meeting their needs. The bass in these temperatures will not run down baits and or travel great distances. They orient more vertical. Blade baits are the best lures for bass under these conditions.
If fishing from a boat, cast shallow and retrieve to deep. Bounce your blade bait off the bottom and pull up and reel when you feel the crank hit bottom. Try to gauge your hopping bait 1 to 2 feet from the bottom. Blanket cover your casts and cover every inch of bottom with your bouncing retrieves. Be ready for the bass to hit the bait on the drop! You still can get hook-ups running your blade baits with a straight retrieve, but this bottom bounce shallow to deep when fish are orienting shallow to deep is deadly deadly effective when the water temp drops.
